Felicity's Winter Outfit

see more of Felicity's outfits on my Etsy Shop  www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls

I fell in love with this cape pattern, and couldn't wait to make Felicity's Winter outfit out of it!!!!  Then I found this very soft red velvet, and knew I had to do it....This is called a Cardinal Cape, not for the cardinal red color....but because it is similar to the cape that Roman Catholic Cardinals in the 1700's wore, and still wear!  It is a full cape with a beautiful gathered hood, made of red velvet, and lined in red satin.  It closes at the neck with 2 gold buttons.  Then to keep her hands warm, she has white leather mitts, embroidered in red, and a white satin muff, embroidered in blue.  One very stylish colonial girl!!!!  I used a pattern I found on Liberty Jane, called Ivy Cape, by Melodie Valerie.

Lovin' Downton Abbey

Those of you that know me and Steven....know that we LOVE Downton Abbey...we are waiting with baited breath....for the next season to start....I particularly love the fashion....(well, I guess I would!?!?) So, have been thinking of doing a line of clothing in the Downton Abbey fashion.  American girl has the Victorian girls fashion covered...and I am replicating that in Samantha's, Nellie's, and Rebecca's outfits, but Adult Victorian Fashion is so much different....so I have decided to start a line called The Abbey Collection....Steven loves the idea...as he still hasn't quite figured out my Steampunk Collection!!!!  So what do you all think...Stay tuned, as I start collecting for the first outfit!!!!

Kirsten's Winter Outfit

See more of Kirsten's outfits on my Etsy Shop  www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls
Kristen’s winter outfit was inspired by a festival costume from the “old country.” The white blouse has full peasant sleeves and a button at the the neckline. Momma, made sure Kirsten had a heavy wool skirt to keep warm, and it has a beautiful braid woven in a pattern at the waist and bands of red and green at the hem. Two hair ribbons woven in bright colors add an enchanting touch.I am almost done all of the 6 start-up Outfits and Accessories for Kirsten....I'm thinkin' some furniture may be in order!!!!

Quilt Time

I was looking for a good quilt to do for Kaya....As American Girl from 1764, Kaya would not have had anything like this quilt, but, when she's being a modern day girl, I think she would love this quilt. The pattern is Morning Star....and it is a quilt used in the Underground Railroad....to let run-away slaves know where safe houses were. I love the bright colors, and I'm sure Kaya does too.

See more doll quilts on my Etsy Store  www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls

As I was working on this...I realized...I totally forgot to post a pic of Kit's quilt.....I was looking for quilts made in the 1930's so that I could do one for Kit. I came across this pieced block that was published in the Chicago Tribune in 1933. The simple Cross Country blocks are set "on point", and in the full quilt, form a basic Irish Chain. The colors are unusual but go together well!

Kirsten's Summertime Accesory Set

Check out more clothes and accessories for Kirsten on my Etsy Shop  www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls
It was summertime, 1854, and Kirsten had found a honey tree....and all that wonderful, sweet honey helped to get her a new straw hat.  There were only 31 States in 1854, so the flag looked much different.  Kirsten always carried her whistle that Papa had carved, just in case there was trouble!!!

New Girl....

I needed a new doll to be my model for my new Steampunk Line.....so I went looking on Ebay....got one really cheap.....but she was in really bad shape.  Very much loved and played with.  She came, and I should have taken pictures of her before I cleaned her up....First, she had layers and layers of make-up.  She sparkled!!!!  Got all that off, and an all over bath, then to get the layers and layers of nail polish on fingers and toes.  Now to tackle the hair.  At some point, it looks like she was re-wigged, but it was a bad wig, and it had been cut, and was missing about half the hair.  Here are pics....

So the wig came off, and I found a really cute short, blond bob on-line....will post pictures later...she came out really cute.....I was gonna name her Steampunk Annie....but there already is a doll online with that name....so came up with Steampunk Kassy.  My neighbor, growing up always called me Kassy instead of Cathy....and Steven said she looked alot like me when I got her all done....so Kassy it is!!!!

Nature Perphanalia

More of Samantha's accessories are on my Etsy Shop
www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls

For Victorians, vacations were a time to learn about the outdoors as well as to have fun there. On sunny days at Piney Point, Samantha loaded up her pack basket and took a nature hike into the Adirondack Mountains. She chased butterflies and picked wildflowers like these.

Josefina's Quilt

Check out more doll quilts on my Etsy Shop
www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls
When Josefina lived in New Mexico in the1820's, quilts would have been a rarety.....most blankets would have been woven.  But, I like to think that Josefina's friend Patrick O'Toole, may have brought her back one from Missouri.  Josefina would have loved the bright colors in this quilt!

Learning Cursive

I just heard the other day, that some schools are doing away with Cursive writing.  Too old school....everything is in type print now....so no longer needed....I beg to differ.....Cursive is a way to put your best foot forward.  In Samantha's time...that was all that was taught.  Children were never taught to print.  It must have been very hard, learning to read print, but having to write it in cursive.  Appearance was all important in Samantha's time....The more fancy you could write...the more important.  .  In school most everything was taught in drills.  Students practiced writing over and over, as with everything else.  They had to learn all the different lines and curves that went into writing.  School was so much more regimented...they had to sit a certain way, hold their pencils a certain way....No wonder penmanship class was so disliked.  I remember getting my knuckles wrapped with a ruler because I held my pen too tightly....and that was a whole lifetime later!!!!

Addy's Quilt

More of the girls quilts on my Etsy Shop
www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls
When Momma and Addy left the plantation and ended up in Philadelphia....everything was so different. Everything was bigger, faster, and more. There was the ocean...that fascinated Addy...and when winter came...they were so much further north...and it was so much colder. BRRRR.....Mrs. Ford let Momma keep scraps from the Dress Shop, and she may have made Addy a warm quilt like this one for her bed. The pattern is Window By the Sea.

Hello Molly!!!

Finally...designing patterns is alot of work.....You knit a row...see how it looks, then right down what you did....takes about 3 times longer then a regular outfit would take....but this one was oh....so...worth it!!!!
See more of Molly's outfits on my Etsy Shop  www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindsgirls
I was worried about the argyle pattern, but it came out great...and I think I can see how to do it for Mini Molly....just put the paper pattern up on Etsy, and will get the downloadable one done tonight!!!  I'm off to can tomatoes from the garden....I love eating fresh stuff all summer....but hate it when it all comes in at once...and then I have to scramble!!!  Spaghetti sauce here we come!!!!

Marie's Photoshoot

I purchased 2 knit patterns, one was an A-line skirt, the other an Argyle sweater so that I could make Molly's Meet outfit....well, they were from a home-made site, and they were so poorly written...The sweater, was only half the instructions....so back to square one.  I've done my own pattern, the Skirt is done, and I must say it came out really cute, I'm working on the sweater...just the front neck area and collar to finish up....so in a day or 2, stay tuned.  I will have the outfit on my Etsy shop when it is finished...and also the pattern....I'm thinkin on Craftsy and Ravelry also!!!!

In the meantime...Marie has a new outfit, that I purchased for her for the end of summer.  It is really cute, I love that hat and shoes....I guess I'm an accessory gal!!!!

Felicity Get's a New Spring Dress For Her Birthday!

See more of Felicity's outfits on my Etsy Shop  www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls
Felicy kept looking at Kirsten's and Samantha's birthday dresses...so we knew we would have to make her one also.  this is a pretty pink gown with a pinner apron.  They didn't put neck ties on aprons in 1774, so they were held up with tiny straight pins, because safety pins hadn't been invented yet....She has a flower pom-pom on her head that momma gave to her.

Kirsten's Birthday Quilt

Quilt is available on my Etsy Shop www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls
After Momma had Baby Britta, Kirsten didn't have time to play with her friends.  She had so much work to do around the house.  But Momma and Papa did plan for her to have a special day for her birthday.  All of her friends were there, and they surprised her with a friendship quilt, like Miss Winsten's family and friends made for her.  They each brought leftover fabric from their own dresses and pieced them together for Kirsten's quilt.  She was so surprised!!!

Follow me in my Newest Adventure!!!!

I am so excited...I have fallen in love with the American Girl Mini's .....the 6-1/2" historical dolls that American Girl makes.  I started looking for clothes...since as you can see from the above photo...most come without clothing when you get them used.  Meet Kirsten, Kit, Rebecca, and Caroline.  I have 8 more in the mail right now!!!!

So I started looking, and couldn't find clothes...or patterns  out there....so thought...I can do that...Now, I said I didn't do Barbie's because she was too small...well these are half her size....I must be insane....but the outfits aren't really that hard to do....and I am working on getting them into patterns to sell on my Etsy Shop.....So here is the first doll outfit...I always start with their undergaments...and here is Kirsten's.Yes, I even made her socks...trying to figure out how to do tights...the socks weren't too bad!!!!
Stay tuned for more outfits on my Etsy Shop  www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls

Molly's Quilt

Check out the other quilts on my Etsy Shop
www.etsy.com/prairiewindgirls

It was World War II and they were trying to conserve EVERYTHING so that supplies could be sent to our soldiers. Molly's Mom had made everyone flannel pajamas for the winter of 1944. There was some leftover flannel so she made Molly a warm quilt to snuggle under. It reminded her of Dad's flannel shirts. Quilt is 14 1/2" X 14 1/2", the perfect size for Molly, or any of the other American Girl dolls.

Yeah! for Molly!!!!

I am so excited to be making outfits for Molly....Alot of her clothes , while not growing up in the 1940's, are like what I wore as a child, and have brought back lots of memories. Here she is in her underwear set. White, white, white...you didn't wear anything else in 1944. This set consists of lace trimmed panties, lace trimmed undershirt, and a ruffled slip. Also included are handknit red and white knee socks.

Keep an eye on my Etsy Shop ( www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls ) I am working on a new outfit for Samantha, and am designing the pattern my self, and will be publishing them on my shop, and you will be able to by them.  I am also going to start making clothes for the AG Mini's and patterns too, as there are no patterns out there!

Milliner's Fashion Doll

Lissy was pouting, Kirsten and Samantha both had their dolls, and she wanted her's.  I was actually able to find wooden Penny dolls in the correct size, to make her one.  In the stories...Lissy saw the doll in the Milliner's shop.  these were sent from Europe in the latest fashions....sample dolls, for women's fashions.    Lissy hoped she would get it for Christmas...and even more...hoped she could have a ball gown for  the Govenor's Palace, just like the one the doll wore. Fortunetely Lissy got both wishes....
Lissy, Kirsten and Samantha's dolls are on my Etsy Shop

Sweet, Sweet Samantha

More of Samanth's outfits on my Etsy Shop
www.etsy.com/shop/prairiewindgirls
Just finished up Samantha's Birthday outfit...it is all sweetness....she is just so precious.  Spent the morning working on the new gals hair....they were all very frazzeled....Last night they all got Downey Spritz...and so they were all dry this morning, and got combed out, and styled....much, much better.  How do you do a Downey Spritz.  Fill a small spritz bottle, 3/4 with warm water, and 2 Tablespoons of Downey.  Shake well, and saturate hair, being careful not to get any in their eyes.  Let dry overnight....and comb out with a wire brush.  You can buy the AG one, or get a wig brush...but if you go into the dog section at WalMart...you can get one really cheap!!!!  Since it is so dry here in Colorado...I think all the girls will get this treatment on a monthly basis!!!!
